needle felting

a niche hobby

Needle felting is a niche hobby gaining more popularity in recent years, requiring fairly high artistic skill levels to make “good” pieces.

However, needlefelting a simple decoration for an accessory or a bear like the one below is an excellent low cost way to discover if this is the hobby for you.

My mother made the white bear pictured, an excellent first project.

Who would this craft suit?

  • Anyone over say 10 years old (needles are very sharp and require good manual dexterity).
  • A person interested in sculpting. You build up the piece in much the same way, sizing and developing the shape as you work.
  • A patient person – this craft takes time and is fiddly.
Here is a quick overview of needle-felting with brief instructions. (you'll find a link to our complete insructions for making a bear lower on that page) The overview opens in a new window so you'll need to temporarily allow pop-ups if you are using a blocker. When you've finished - close the window to return here.

What skills are required?

As mentioned earlier, you can be a complete beginner and make a simple bear. To make figurines and intricate pieces you need a good understanding of body proportions and facial features.
