Needle felting instructions
Needle felting instructions are not complicated, the basics can be explained in one or two sentences:-
- Place a block of foam on your table or knees.
- Take a handful of fleece (or other fibre) of your choice and color in your left hand.
- Begin stabbing it (the bundle of fleece - not your hand !) with your felting needle, turning as you go (unless you're making a flat item). The more you stab the firmer the item becomes.
That in a nutshell is needle felting.
Now the interesting part is what you can do with this very simple process - and that is only limited by your imagination and skill …yes, like every other craft – the more you practice the better you become, the more you are able to create.
My first project was to be a bear, but the bear's head was larger than I planned so I felted a thin layer of beige fibres over the bear's head and – presto - it turned into an easily recognisable beetle …….
Another super advantage for beginners of this craft is that it can be really inexpensive to try.
Certainly you can head straight for a pre-packaged needle felting kit with everything in it – but you could also take the budget route and buy your equipment, materials and needle felting instructions separately, craft stores and ebay now have quite good supplies.
Very little in the way of material and equipment is required to begin needle felting.
Wool fibres (or if you have an unshorn poodle or Llama wandering around your backyard that would do….), but in the event you're like me - short on poodles or llamas at present - you'll need to hop onto ebay or one or the craft suppliers who sell fleece.
You'll also need a couple of different size felting needles, an instruction sheet - use our free needle felting instruction sheet to make your version of the bear my mother made – and a piece of foam to place your work on.
That's about all you need to begin - oh I nearly forgot - a good sense of humour. My sister, mother and I made our first pieces together – amidst a great deal of laughter - wonderful for the spirit….
