Mittens free knit pattern
for toddler mitts
Using the mittens free knit pattern below is quick and easy, once you've mastered basic knitting techniques, to advance your skills, namely, casting on and picking up additional stitches.

Measurements :
Fits 12.5 cm / 5 inch hand
Materials:
50g ball 8 ply wool/knitting yarn 1 pair 3.75 mm (US #5, UK #9 )knitting needles 1 pair 3 mm (US #3, UK # 11) knitting needles
Tapestry or wool needle
Tension/gauge: 23.5 sts to 10 cm (approx. 4 ins) over stocking stitch
Special Instructions/ abbreviations: st. = stitch, k. = knit, p. = purl, st.st,= stocking stitch, sl, = slip stitch, p.s.s.o = pass slip stitch over M1: = Make one - used to increase stitches other than at the beginning or end of row: - pick up loop below the next st. on left needle, place it on the left needle and knit (or purl) into back of loop.
Right Mitten
Cast on 28 sts using no 11 (3 mm) needles.
1st row: - K2 * P1, K1, rep. from * to end.
Work 15 more rows to form rib.
Then change to no 9 ( 3.75 mm ) needles to complete.
1st row: - Knit
2nd row: - k1, purl to last st. k1 **
3rd row: - k15, M1, k1, M1, k12
4th row: - same as 2nd row
5th row: - same as 1st row
6th row: - same as 2nd row
7th row:- k15, M1, k1, M1, k12
Repeat rows 4,5,6.
7th row:- k15, M1, k3, M1, k12
Repeat rows 4,5,6.
11th row:- k15 M1, k5, M1, k12
Repeat rows 4,5,6.
15th row:- k15, M1, k7, m1, k12
16th row:- k1, purl to last st. k1
Mitten Thumb
Next row: - k.25, turn
then k1 ,p1, turn, cast on 2 sts,
*** Work 10 rows st. st. on these 12 sts
Then to shape the top of thumb,
1st row: - k 2 tog, k1 to end of row
2nd row: - k1, purl to last st, k1
3rd row: - k 2 tog, across row.
Cut wool/yarn, leaving enough to thread though the remaining sts, with the wool or tapestry needle. Draw up and finish off securely.
Now with right side of knitting facing, pick up and k 2 sts from the cast-on sts at base of thumb,Knit to end.
You should have 28 sts again on the needle.
Work 17 rows in st.st. keeping k1 at both ends on purl rows.
Shape mitten top
1st row: - ( k1, sl.1, k1, psso, k8, k 2 tog, k1,), twice,
2nd, 4th, 6th rows: - k1, purl to last st, k1
3rd row: - ( k1, sl,1, k1, psso, k6, k2 tog, k1),twice,
5th row: - ( k1, sl,1, k1, psso, k4, k 2 tog, k1), twice,
7th row: - (k1, sl.1, k1, psso, k2, k 2 tog, k1), twice,
This leaves 12 sts.
8th row : - k1, purl to last st, k1.
Cast off (bind off)
Left Mitten
Work as for Right Mitten to **.
3rd row: - k12, M1, k1, M1, k15.
4th row: - k1, purl to last st, k1.
5th row: - knit
6th row: - same as 4th row
7th row: - k12, M1, k3, M1, k15,
Repeat rows 4,5, 6.
11th row: - k12, M1, k5, M1, k15,
Repeat rows 4,5,6,
15th row: - k12, M1, k7, M1, k15,
16th row: - k1, purl to last st, k1.
Make thumb.
1st row: - k21, turn, cast on 2 sts.
Next row : - k1, p 10, k1, turn,
Continue as for Right Mitten from *** to end.
To finish your mittens
Use a flat seam, join thumb and hand seams and weave in loose threads. in knitting.
