Free knitting lessons - 4
how to cast off - bind off

Welcome to Knitting lessons 4 - in this basic free knitting lessons series.

I hope you enjoyed your first 3 lessons and have practiced your new knitting skills.

Are you ready to learn how to cast off (CO) bind off (BO) your knitting stitches.

how to cast off

Knit the first two stitches.Note: Most patterns call for you to cast off with the right side (smooth knit side) facing you.

how to cast off 2

Using your left hand needle, insert it into the first of the two stitches you knitted, pull this stitch over the second stitch you knitted.

This will seem a little awkward at first but you’ll soon get the hang of it.You now have one stitch on your right hand needle.

how to bind off

Knit another stitch. Once again you have two stitches on your right hand needle. Again pull the first stitch over the top of the second stitch.

how to bind off

Again you will have only one stitch on your right hand needle

how to bind off

Keep repeating the above steps until all your stitches have been cast off (bind off).

You will have one loop left.

Cut your yarn leaving a 10cm (4 inch tail). Push this tail through the remaining loop.

Congratulations…you now know the basics of knitting – cast on, knit, purl, cast off (bind off)

Put together lesson 1 - how to cast on
with lesson 2 - how to knit a rows of stitches
and lesson 3 - how to cast off (bind off)
and you have a garter stitch scarf.

Or

Put together lessons 1,2,3, and 4 and you will have a stocking (stockinette) stitch skinny scarf. (stocking stitch edges roll inward).

Or

Put together lesson 1 cast on
Combine lessons 2 and 3 on one row (rib stitch)
Finish off with lesson 4 and you'll have a lovely ribbed pattern scarf.

Here's another great lesson - how to rib stitch

Ribbing (as knitters call this particular stitch pattern) is an extremely useful pattern to learn. Over time you'll use it for scarves as well as cuffs and edges on hats, socks and jumpers etc.

Once you get the hang of lessons 1-4 and ribbing you simply - practice, practice, practice.

Use as many different of patterns and projects types as you can…that’s the way you’ll become an experienced and proficient knitter…

Wander around this site, surf through our knitting patterns section - (there's a button on the left hand tool bar. )

Look for patterns that say "skill level - beginner", or if you have a little more confidence - "skill level - easy" , you'll find plenty of good quality patterns here - and remember we give free pattern help and advice for all the patterns downloaded from this site......we take our customer service seriously and are more than happy to encourage beginners....

only one thing left for me to say…… happy knitting
