How to knit stitches
Knitting lessons 2
How to knit stitches in a row.
I hope you enjoyed your first lesson - knitting - how to cast on.
Are you ready for lesson 2. ?
If you've completed lesson 1 you now have a series of potential stitches (loops at the moment) on your left hand needle.
We now want to knit those stitches from the left hand needle to the right hand needle.
Here's how :
Place the point of your right hand needle into the first loop on your left hand needle and wrap the wool round the needle from front to back as shown in the photograph. (note in the photo rows of stitches have already been, indicating how your knitted stitches will look).
Twist the right hand needle point through the loop you have formed. Pull the knitted stitch off the left hand needle onto your right hand needle.
Repeat.
Well done - you've knitted your first row.
What now? If you're knitting garter stitch you simply swap your needle containing the stitches into your left hand and repeat the above steps over and over until you reach the required length - then go to lesson 4 to learn how to cast off (bind off).
BUT
If you want to knit stocking stitch (stockinette stitch) - one of the most frequently used and popular knitting stitch patterns - you need to learn how to purl a row of stitches.
