Knitting kit

A knitting kit, such as the one below, is a terrific starting point for complete beginners without a stockpile of yarn, wool or a range of needles.

knitting kit

If you are a self starter, and don’t require workshop type knitting lessons, this would be a perfect way for you to begin – but before purchasing check the contents they should include:

  • wool or yarn
  • picture of completed article
  • pattern instructions

Below items are not usually included and need to be purchased separately :

  • knitting needles
  • optional wool or tapestry sewing needle (to neaten the ends)
NOTE: The size needles you require to complete the project should be shown on the outside package.

A word of warning when choosing your project. If this is your very first knitting project – stick with traditional wools or yarns rather than the new fancy, hairy novelty yarns.

Why? When you're learning to knit you are bound to miss a stitch, drop a stitch or possibly even need to pull some of your knitting undone to rectify an error.

(Don’t worry, this is all part of the learning curve.)

Hairy novelty yarn makes correcting knitting problems far more difficult, and you may well have completed your project before you see a “hole” appear…very disappointing.

Where to obtain your knitting kit

You'll find a range in specialty knitting, craft, chain stores and online.

The dog coat project pictured above was purchased from Big W Discount stores.

In Australia Spotlight, Lincraft and Big W stores carry stocks in winter, but you may need to hunt around a little during the summer months.

If you have trouble obtaining your kit locally - you can purchase online. thewoolshack.com.au ,an Australian site, freqently sell kits online - be aware they can be pricey - you pay for the convenience.

In the USA www.lionbrand.com is an excellent, reputable site allowing you to compile your knitting kit from their list of suggestions and then order it online.

In summary. Providing you are willing to pay a little extra kits are easy and convenient. You'll have the confidence of knowing the yarn included is suitable for the project and - providing you are using the correct needles - your project will work.
