Knitted felted purses
a delightful surprise..

When I discovered knitted felted purses and bags it opened a brand new craft door for me and I bet it will for you too...

The concept of knitting then felting purses and bags totally amazed and surprised me. I was amazed that any knitter in their right mind would purposely shrink their beautiful handiwork. Then I was surprised by the fantastic results felting produced.... I was definitely interested.....

The search was on to discover which type of wools - other than cascade 220 to felt, felting techniques with a washing machine or without a suitable machine and how to block the felted bag

Like everyone else I’d accidentally shrunk hand-knits in the past (why is it always the expensive item that shrinks?) but I didn't know if shrinking and matting was actually the same as felting, and how much was my bag supposed to shrink?

My mind was chock full of questions. Now happily dozens, yes I do mean literally dozens of felted bag patterns later, and now knowing how to felt bags I realize the whole knitting-to-felt process was easier, and a whole lot more fun, than I’d anticipated.

I needn’t have stressed out worrying whether I would waste the cost of my wool and the hours spent knitting.

What was the key? Test, test, test. Most knitters find knitting test squares boring and avoid them (yes, I’m guilty as well) ...but...when it comes to felting a wool or wool/yarn combination you haven’t used for your knitted felted purses before it’s better to spend a few minutes knitting and a little water felting a test square than waste your wool and your time....here’s a perfect example of just what I mean about testing.

compare felting wools

Not all wools are equal. One felted the other didn't - it simply lost all colour.

If you’re the impatient type (I can relate to that..) - just want to see what happens....and have wool (not acrylic) in your stash, a pair of size 8mm or 9mm needles (UK0 or 00)(US 11 or 13) and a washing machine - knit a 10 x 10cm (4 x 4 ins) square the go and felt it using our felting techniques and felting instructions and photographs.

Here’s how I began my own felt crafts bag felting journey, it’s been fun, and has turned into a passion.

I find my mind brimming with new ideas, designs, and patterns... there’s alway a new wool or combination to try, in short - never enough hours in a day...bet you find the same .....happy felting......
