Here's knit purl help to fix mistakes in ribbing - easily made by even the most experienced knitters.
Let's say you're knitting rib stitch, lose concentration and you've knitted instead of purled.
Before you know it you've knitted several rows past the error. Now you have a choice, either pull those rows undone and re-knit, a nuisance and waste of time if only one or two rib stitches are incorrect.
Or you simply swap knit for purl, and purl for knit. It really is easy once you know how.
Here are the step-by-step instructions. Yes ..it's my genuine mistake, I was - off with the fairies - and knitted several rows before checking my work.....hummmmm....perfect opportunity to show how it's done.
You could use a knitting needle for this process if you don't have a crochet hook - but a hook is much easier.
Okay let's begin with these knit purl help instructions -

1. You are looking at the wrong side of the work. The stitch pointed to should be a purl on the right side, a knit on the wrong side. It's easier to change a knit to a purl so turn your work if necessary.

2. Swap any stitches in your way to the right hand needle so the stitch you are correcting is the first stitch on your left hand needle.

3. Drop the incorrect stitch off the left hand needle and gently pull it undone down to one row below the mistake - make sure your other stitches stay on their relevant needles

4. Using a crochet hook one or two sizes smaller than your needle size, push it up through the stitch - from front to back, then twist it to hook around the loop from the row above.
Make sure you get only the strand of yarn directly above your last correct stitch.

5. Pull the strand you picked up through the loop on your crochet needle - you've made the equivalent of a knit stitch. ( If you're a crocheter this will be a breeze - it's the same as a single crochet chain - but vertical).

6. Check your stitch is straight and not twisted. If it's twisted - try again. Check the other side of your work. Have you missed any strands ?

If your stitch is nice and straight, looking the same as the correct stitches lower down your rib -
loop back to step 4 of knit purl help above and repeat until you reach the top of your work and have picked up all the loops.

8. Replace any stitches you removed from the left hand needle. Turn your work (if you previously turned it in step one. ) In other words make sure your work is facing the correct direction for you to keep knitting or purling...it's easy to get confused and go the wrong way.

This same method can be used to rectify errors in stocking stitch or any other stitch pattern.
Simply remember it's easier to make a good job of picking up when you have the knit side facing you.
