How to knit a scarf

Here's how to knit a scarf by using our specifically designed free beginner knitting pattern.

It’s easy, the yarn is low cost and you’ll be delighted with the results.

When you are first learning to knit it is easy to make a mistake or drop a stitch.

I suggest you choose one of the smooth wools or yarns for your first how to knit a scarf project (see suggestions below).

Finished scarf measurements If using suggested yarn your finished scarf length will be approximately
145 cms with Panda Yarn or
45inches with Lion Brand yarn

Materials - supplies

6oz US Category 6 Super Bulky yarn Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick n Quick - available to purchase one line from Lion Brand supplies stores
or

200g 14ply UK/Australia - if using Panda Holiday Chunky readily available at Kmart stores.

1 pair standard knitting needles 9mm (US #13 UK #00 )
Tapestry or wool sewing needle

Alternatively - substitute any wool in above quantities whose label band states tension 10 sts x 12 rows using size 9mm needle size to a 10cm (4ins) tension/gauge square.

How to knit a scarf Instructions

Cast on 28 sts

Row 1 - knit
Row 2 - knit
Row 3 - knit 4, Purl 4, Knit 4, purl 4, knit 4, purl 4, knit 4
Row 4 - Knit 8, purl 4, knit 4, purl 4, Knit 8
Row 5 - repeat row 3
Row 6 - repeat row 4
Row 7 - knit 8, purl 4, knit 4, purl 4, knit 8
Row 8 - knit4, purl 4, knit 4, purl 4, knit 4
Row 9 - repeat row 7
Row 10 - repeat row 8
Row 11 - repeat row 3
Row 12 - repeat row 4
Row 13 - repeat row 3
Row 14 - repeat for 4
Row 15 - knit 4, purl 20, knit 4
Row 16 - knit 4, purl 20, knit 4
Row 17 - knit all stitches across row
Row 18 - knit 4, purl 20, knit 4

NOTE rows 1 to 18 form the scarf end patterns.

The main section of your scarf consists of stocking stitch with a garter stitch border.

Continue repeating rows 17 and 18, keeping garter stitch border correct, until your scarf measures 40 inches Lion brand (115 cms Panda 14ply) finishing with a row 18.

You will now complete the other end of your scarf with a mirror reversed border.

Row 1 - knit 4, purl 20, knit 4
Row 2 - knit 8, purl 4, knit 4, purl 4, knit 8
Row 3 - Knit 4, purl 4, knit 4, purl 4, knit 4, purl 4, knit 4
Row 4 - repeat row 2
Row 5 - repeat row 3
Row 6 - Knit 4, purl 4, knit 4, purl 4, knit 4, purl 4, knit 4
Row 7 - knit 8, purl 4, knit 4, purl 4, knit 8
Row 8 - repeat row 6
Row 9 - repeat row 7
Row 10 - repeat row 2
Row 11 - repeat row 3
Row 12 - repeat row 2
Row 13 - repeat row 3
Row 14 - knit across all stitched
Row 15 - knit across all stitches
Cast off all 28 stitches.

To finish your scarf use a wool sewing or tapestry needle to sew in the loose yarn ends
