Free felted knitting patterns
using Patons Jet or equivalent
Another of our free felted knitting patterns for a knit-to-felt (fulled) bag using Patons Jet or equivalent 12ply wool. While we knit and knit-to-felt many, many bags, purses and totes this was one of the first bags we double felted and loved both the effect of the “can hardly see the stripes” and the very hairy finish. it’s a great bag to cuddly up to. | With a body measurement of 27 x 27cms - you can see why we’ve laughingly named this one of our free felted knitting patterns “Hairy Mary”!!

Patons Jet for felting (fulling)We frequently use Patons Jet for felting the larger bags and totes, loving the firm finish and quick results knitting a 12ply brings. However, we usually only single felt our Jet bags and totes giving them a smooth muted finish. The muted finish is created by the Alpaca component of Jet’s alpaca/wool blend. For this particular bag we were looking for a non striping finish - the hairy look was a bonus! If you prefer the smooth look - only single felt your bag - keep in mind it will be a couple of cms larger.(both double felting and single felting is explained within the pattern). Patons Jet (check your ball band says 30% alpaca 70% wool) is readily available from knitting wool stores, Spotlight, Lincraft, K-mart and just about anywhere you find wool sold within Australia, it’s excellent for felting bags and is very reasonably priced. If however, you’re visiting our site from a country that doesn’t stock this alpaca-wool blend, substitute any self striping 12 ply wool. Simply choose one with a ball band tension of 16.5 sts to 22 rows based on 5.5mm needles. (We’ve included both metric and imperial measurements and needle sizes within the pattern.) How to felt If you’re not experienced felting (fulling) knitted bags and purses - no problem -we’ve included links within the pdf pattern taking you directly to our “ how to felt “ pages. You’ll discover how easy the process is and how to obtain excellent results with a minimum of effort using your washing machine.
