Cotton knitting yarn
summer knitting
We use cotton knitting yarn for a variety of knitted bags, purses, totes, beach tote bags, summer scarves and hats. Why? Because we love it.... Easy care and soft to knit with, I guarantee you’ll be hooked on this fantastic natural yarn once you try it. Not so long ago cotton knitting yarn was fairly difficult to find, especially in Australia, expensive and limited in it’s colour range. Not any more. Apart from the Sirdar yarn range ( which seems to have been around forever) Anchor variegated colours are now more readily available through knitting, craft and Spotlight stores. Speaking of Spotlight stores (skip this paragraph if you don't shop in Australia) have you notices they carry Yarn Bee yarn? We've used several different varieties for our unique patterns and designs including " Hues of Opulence #106". It's a beautiful mercerised style 100% cotton. Spotlight also carry Moda Vera branded "Supremo". Again it's 100% cotton, not mercerised, and slightly bumpy textured - rather similar, but not quite as bumpy as the old "Patons Naturally Summer 8ply". And thank goodness
Bendigo Woollen Mills
have added online ordering to their traditional mail order service. Their online service is safe, secure and I highly recommend it ( postage is free if you order more than A$30 or A$3 if less) Now that’s an absolute bargain !
(In case you wondered - no - I don’t get a kick-back from Bendigo Mills I’m just a big fan of their cottons and colour range for knitted bags). | I love the "mango" cotton in this photograph and have used it for several of my bag patterns.

Bendigo 8ply knitting cotton is a slightly lighter gauge than either Sirdar or Anchor 8ply (for US visitors it leans towards sports weight rather than worsted weight). Gauge of course matters when you are knitting a sweater or fitted garment but is not as critical when making scarves or bags. The big benefit of course in knitting with Bendigo Cotton is its cost - far less, and because its sold in 200g balls it means you don’t have as many of those nasty ends to sew in.... Try some of the brands discussed - see which you prefer. Need a pattern? ...what about this knitting beach bag pattern ....
